Here's a sampling of what Kansas City nightlife has to offer.

It takes a whole lot of fabulous to keep J Space going, so every month we feature guest stars for you to meet and learn about. Our July guest is Lisa Houser, an Overland Park good witch who knows how to be bad.

Oh the draw of $1 flip-flops.

You would have thought Old Navy was giving gasoline away Saturday morning. By the time I arrived with five eager nieces and nephews in tow, the Olathe store had been open only 15 minutes, and already moms were leaving the store as if it was on fire, kids and Old Navy plastic bags in hand.

Melissa in Kansas City: Final Week

Melissa GrahamMelissa Graham
Summer is finally here and it's time to start having some fun. Get outside and take advantage of everything that Kansas City has to offer. Hopefully I've given you some good ideas for things to do this summer, but here are my suggestions for a few things that are not to be missed.

First, come take my Segway tour! If you've never rode a Segway before, it really is a blast, and you get to hang out with me! (Shameless self promotion!) I've been leading tours for Segway Experience of Kansas City for 2 years now, and I love it a little more each day. Next time you have people in town and you're looking for something to do, bring them on any of my tours. The Urban Journey is a great way to show off Kansas City and give them some history of the city. Book the 90 minute Urban Journey, and we'll go up to Liberty Memorial for one of the best views in the city. Or take them to the Zoo for a Segway Safari and show off the second largest urban zoo in the country. The new Zoo entrance is great, and we have close to a thousand animals this year. The Plaza Art and Architecture Tour is beautiful and explores a complete outdoor art gallery. I bet you never knew the Mermaid Statues in front of Eddie Bauer are over 300 years old! And don't wait for people to come in town--get a group of friends together, or take a date and be a tourist in your own city. Check out our website and browse the pictures: www.segwayexperience.com, or 816.531.0600

Melissa in Kansas City: Week Three

Melissa GrahamMelissa Graham
There are a few things I've discovered in Kansas City that I simply can't live without.

They are things that always make me happy and always make me grateful to be living in Kansas City. My favorite: happy hour.

Each Wednesday for the last three years, my best friends and I have been getting together after work and enjoying great food, great drinks, great friends and fabulous restaurants.

Melissa in Kansas City: Week Two

Melissa GrahamMelissa Graham

There are a lot of things I love about Kansas City, but one of the things I love the most is that I can always find fun things to do for free.

With gas prices on the rise and the cost of almost everything going up, I know my friends and I are definitely on a tighter budget. I hate having to give up things I want to do because of money, so I have come up with a list of some of the best free activities in Kansas City. It may cost you some gas money to get there, but once you're there you have nothing to worry about.

Melissa in Kansas City: Week One

Melissa GrahamMelissa Graham
As a teenager growing up in the suburbs of Kansas City, I always looked forward to the occasional Saturday afternoon drive down to Westport or the Plaza.

I loved going to visit my psychic at Aquarius or just window shopping on the Plaza. Rarely did I venture north of Westport, and when I did, I always got lost.

Hillary in High School: Final Week

I’m exasperated. The last bell has rung, firing students into summer. Finals are finished, and now I’m no longer a freshman. Wow, what I a year!

Hillary BernhardtHillary Bernhardt

I admit I’m too excited about summer to mourn the loss of never getting my freshman year of high school back, but I already feel a sense of nostalgia.

HILLARY IN HIGH SCHOOL: WEEK THREE

Official and unofficial teachers exist everywhere. They are people who take time to teach or show you something most people won’t. If you encounter a teacher, you must take advantage of the opportunity to learn.

Neighbors, aunts, uncles, siblings, moms, dads, grandparents, friends, ministers, acquaintances, and the ones students see everyday at school – they are all teachers.

Hillary in High School: Week Two

I have goals that are tucked away in the back of my mind. Then, I have my list. Extremely special, it’s comprised of simple, silly things that somehow escaped my childhood.
Hillary BernhardtHillary Bernhardt
Here, I proclaim the importance of youth. Adolescence is crucial to each individual’s development of seemingly unimportant skills and abilities. Youth is a once in lifetime period when the only things that matter are counting flower petals or riding bikes. With all this time, opportunities abound for random skill development. And children act as sponges, absorbing all they can.

Hillary in High School

Every now and then, little chances arise where people can test their luck. Sometimes people are in the mood to win – be it some sweet swag, concert tickets on the radio, bets between friends, or the lottery.

Deep down, we all want to beat the odds; I am no different.

Flipping through an issue of TeenVogue, I noticed a fashion contest for American Eagle. To enter, each participant was required to submit three ‘looks’ that mirrored the American Eagle style.

Collette in Germany: Week Five

Hallo KC!

This is my final blog to you!

Last Tuesday’s trip to Switzerland was insightful. Very particular museums of design and painting interests we toured through. I was particularly interested in the Kunst Museum where we saw many Claude Monet and Picasso Painting as well as some more Van Gogh. The Max Bill exhibition was quite informative and I saw a lot of pieces that have been incorporated in the teachings from my own home college. We ventured through the FotoMuseum of Winterthur where there was an exquiste collection of photos from the War---the condition of these pieces were remarkable it truly captured the essence and emotion of that event. The trip to Winterthur was not only educational and inspirational but it was fun going with all the students – laughing and talking. One thing I did take away from Switzerland was the one thing that I absolutely adored was their CHOCOLATE! Omg it is the best absolutely amazing!

Birdz and Beez, Baby.

Two years ago April Lacher was a stay-at-home mom and wife. That alone was hard work _ taking care of her son, paying bills, cleaning house, running the day-to-day errands. Still, she wanted more.

She'd discovered she had an artsy side when she was planning her wedding. To save money, she took on the task of decorating the facility, designed the floral arrangements and helped create the invitations.

"I realized I loved creating beautiful things that other people could appreciate," says April, 32.

So when a family member couldn't use a lip balm because of an allergy to almond oil, April figured she could make some.

T'n'A at the P&L

I just don’t understand why there has to be so much T’n’A. It’s everywhere. Just take a look at our new entertainment district.

I mean, the Power & Light is sexy enough with Mosaic, the chic lounge with Miami flair.

The indoor-outdoor living room with potent martinis is the gem of the Cordish Co.’s mall of bars that have taken over downtown.

But it isn’t enough to have sultry décor and a hot staff. The P&L wants its waitresses to look as if they’re auditioning for a spot in the Pussycat Dolls.

Seriously, the servers at Angel’s Rock Bar look like extras in that old Christina Aguilera video — “Dirrty.” And pretty much every bar in the district serves up a wait staff with thighs exposed and/or breasts spilling out of their tops.
