R.I.P. Estelle Getty a.k.a. Sophia Petrillo

Estelle Getty, known best as Sophia Petrillo, the feisty and fabulous mama on "The Golden Girls," died this morning in her Hollywood home. She was 84.

The show opened the doors for the likes of "Sex and the City," and roles portraying independent, outspoken women not afraid of their sexuality or single lives. Estelle's role of Sophia is iconic. In a lot of ways, she represented for women, old and young alike, that it was completely acceptable to speak your mind and live life according to your own rules. Our Concepts of Beauty Can be Pretty Ugly

Ugly Betty is beautiful.Ugly Betty is beautiful.

Something I heard the other night stuck with me.

In a heart-breaking moment one of my favorite TV characters said, “I should have known when he said I was beautiful, he was talking about on the inside.”

Three seasons in, and I forget that “Ugly Betty” is supposed to be, well, ugly.
