Be One Less.
By now, most people have seen the "One Less" Gardasil commercials with the cheesy, catchy song. And if you haven't seen the commercials, surely you have heard about the vaccine. It's no joke, if you are a female under 26, you need to take this very seriously. And now the pricey vaccine ($300-$500) is being offered for free at select clinics in Kansas and Missouri. But my doctor says all sexually active women should be concerned about HPV. Even though the commercials market it to women 26 and younger, many doctors offer it at their discretion to their older sexually active patients as well. You will have to pay out of pocket. The FDA is currently doing trials on women ages 27-45. (Read more on that at here.
Whatever you decide, don't think for one minute you aren't at risk. If you are having sex, you are at risk.
Four out of every five sexually active men and women in the United States will get the human papillomavirus (HPV) at some point in their lives. It often clears up without treatment, but it some cases it leads to pre-cancerous abnormalities, genital warts, cervical cancer and more. There is no treatment for HPV infection. But routine Pap screening can lead to successful treatment of pre-cancerous abnormalities.
You cannot see HPV, and there are more than 40 strains of it. Most people who become infected with HPV do not even know they have it. For more on HPV, visit here
